A concrete deck block is a precast pier that gives deck posts and beams a solid, level base without digging footings or pouring concrete. You set the blocks on firm, level ground and build straight on top, which makes them a fast, popular choice for ground-level decks, sheds, walkways, ramps, and other light structures.

Our deck blocks are cast in the same dense, freeze-thaw rated concrete we use across our precast line, so they stand up to Canadian winters and spread the load evenly. The notched 4-way top accepts a post or standard dimensional lumber laid flat or on edge, so your framing drops right in with no extra hardware.

Deck blocks are ideal for free-standing, ground-level builds where a full foundation is not required. For structures attached to your home, or anywhere local frost-depth rules apply, check your building code first, since some builds need footings below the frost line.

Deck Block FAQ

Questions, answered.

What is a concrete deck block?

A concrete deck block is a precast concrete pier with a notched top that supports deck posts and beams. It gives you a level, load-spreading base set right on the ground, so you can build a deck or shed without pouring concrete footings.

Do I need footings, or can I just use deck blocks?

For free-standing, ground-level structures like a floating deck or a shed, deck blocks are often all you need. For anything attached to your house, or in areas with frost-depth requirements, your local building code may require footings dug below the frost line. When in doubt, check with your local building office.

What size lumber fits an RMC deck block?

Our deck block has a 4-way notched top that accepts a 4x4 post or standard 2x dimensional lumber, so beams and joists sit securely without extra brackets.

Will concrete deck blocks crack in a Canadian winter?

They are made for it. We cast our deck blocks in a dense, freeze-thaw rated mix, the same concrete we use for products that sit outdoors year-round across Western Canada, so they resist cracking and spalling through freeze-thaw cycles.

Where can I buy Rocky Mountain Concrete deck blocks?

Our deck blocks are stocked by building centres and landscape supply yards across Western Canada. Contact us and we will point you to your nearest dealer, or order directly from our plant in Lumby, BC.
